LOST ON THE ROAD

My award wining debut feature currently doing the festival circuit, it premiered at the London Independent Film Festival in October 2026 and won Best No Budget Feature.

Entirely improvised and featuring some of the UKs best comedy talent, it is a journey of Lord of the Rings proportions, but set in the British countryside. It follows four estranged friends that used to play Dungeons and Dragons together who reunite for a stag weekend. Jack, the sensible groom, hopes for a simple country walk but his chaotic friends have other ideas. With his wedding fast approaching, Jack faces a quest as epic as any they once rolled dice for: deciding whether to hold onto the ring... or let it go.

THE VOICE

Directed by me and written by Olivier winner Jon Brittain, this short stars Joz Norris as the voice of Siri. We made this silly heartfelt film just before Covid and released it mid way through whilst everything was shut down.It remains a favourite of mine.

SO BEANO!

ASTONISHING TALES OF UNEXPECTEDNESS

I directed a series of sketches for Shy One and the Beano's So Beano. Helmed by John Henry Falle aka the Sory Beast and Mandy Dassa they were so much fun to make. Shot entirely on green screen with practical effects in tow, we had a super tight turnaround and worked hard to give them a strong visual identity.

SANTAGEDDON

Back in 2014 we were running shows out of an abandoned derelict department store. The location was so incredible I asked if I could film there before the venue was fitted. Made to look like an old, cheap, VHS nasty, a group of "teens" spend Christmas Eve together unaware of the evil that is about to awaken. The cast is so good, starring, John Kearns, Gemma Wheelan, Nick Helm, Bec Hill, Pat Cahill, Joz Norris and Stuart Laws it was so fun to spend the night filming in all these unusual spaces. I still have so much love for this film.

SPONGEBOB BIOSHOCK

I am, as you may have guessed, a massive nerd. I've done a lot of writing for Channel 4's Mashed over the years and I really get to flex those geeky muscles here. In this one I got to take two of my absolute things, the world of Bioshock and give it the SpongeBob treatment. I always love seeing them after they've been animated. This is my absolute favourite I've done.

GOMMBAGEDDON

This was a tweet, that became a joke in my live set, that we ended up turning into a Mashed skit. It became a cartoonishly violent gore fest and I love every second of it and with almost 3 million views other people seemed to as well.

MR BLOBBY

Over the years I've had a lot of silly things go viral (humble brag) and I would be remiss if I didn't mention the UKs most beloved Eldritch horror in my work. At some point during the pandemic I got obsessed with developing my editing skills and putting Mr Blobby into things. Adding him to Jamiroqua's Virtual Insanity is arguably the best (certainly the most popular). I did so many of these they were mentioned on ITVs Lorainne.

STOCK FOOTAGE

One of the other things I became really known for was recreating title sequences out of stock footage (we all need a hobby). Again I did a lot of these over the years but hands down the best is the X-Men one.

MARIO WITH FARTS

At some point you realise you're not making content you're making art. Just for the fun of it, here's the OG Super Mario but all the sound effects are farts. You got this far into the page, why not.

SHOWREEL

If you want to see a quick overview of the sorts of things I do, then this is the showreel for that.

Matthew Highton is a writer-director-comedian known for his distinctive blend of surreal comedy, offbeat storytelling and finding the absurd hiding in everyday life... He also once survived a shark attack that turned out to be a dolphin…

A lifelong cinephile and self-confessed nerd, Matthew has always been drawn to the visual language of storytelling, especially film. He recently fulfilled a life long goal and completed his debut feature Lost on the Road which brings together his experience as a performer, writer and filmmaker into his first full-length narrative work.

With a background in alternative comedy and live performance, Matthew has spent almost two decades developing a unique comic voice across stand-up, sketch, online films and narrative work. He is also the host of Belgium Comic Con, bringing his distinctive mix of comedy and audience interaction to one of Europe’s biggest pop culture events. His work has featured on platforms including the BBC, ITV and Channel 4, while his online comedy has reached millions through a series of viral hits (he’s the guy who kept putting Mr Blobby into things) leading to work and collaborations with brands including LEGO and the Beano.

And just to be clear, when you’re chest deep in the water it’s hard to tell it’s a dolphin…

Who even is this guy?
